Social Security Benefits Resources
Here are a few "social security benefits" resources
Social Security Administration (www.ssa.gov; 800-772-1213 or TTY: 1-800-325-0778). The website provides detailed information regarding eligibility, types of benefits and application procedures. The site also offers a variety of free online tools, such as a life expectancy calculator and retirement age calculator that show how monthly benefits may be reduced if an individual claim before full retirement age. Social Security field offices are located in Mineola, Melville and Freeport. Staffers can help people run numbers showing what they will be paid over time, depending on when you file, but they don't make recommendations about strategies.
AARP Social Security Benefits Calculator (www.aarp.org/sscalculator). Similar to the SSA’s benefits estimator, it also estimates the percent of one’s living expenses that will be covered by Social Security and allows you to tweak the expense assumptions. The tool doesn’t include any spousal or survivor decision-making tools.
Ask Mary Jane (www.ncpssm.org). This site is a free service provided by the National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare. Click “Ask a Social Security Expert.”
