AARP’s Livable Communities website offers a Home Fit Guide (Click Tool Kits & Resources), which provides lessons, suggestions, practical solutions and several downloadable worksheets and checklists for making home modifications.

A joint project of the National Resource Center on Supportive Housing and Home Modification and the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence at the University of Southern California, the website serves as an information clearinghouse on home modification to promote aging in place. The site includes a National Directory of Home Modification and Repair Resources, which has a state-by-state listing of places to find contractors and architects, and resources for specific jobs such as installing ramps.

Rebuilding Together is national nonprofit organization that provides low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities, with critical home repairs, accessibility modifications and energy-efficient upgrades, free of charge.

The organization’s local affiliate, Rebuilding Together Long Island, (www.rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org), has about 250 volunteers who help economically disadvantaged homeowners in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Contact: 631-777-7894.

www.eldercare.gov (Search by topic, Home Repair & Modification). The Eldercare Locator provides a fact sheet and brochure on home modifications and resources, including how to determine needs, identify costs and how to hire contractors. 

www.nahb.org (Click For Consumers). The National Association of Home Builders provides general information about aging in place, in addition to an online directory that can help consumers find remodeling and certified aging-in-place specialists.
