Hofstra University PEIR (Personal Enrichment in Retirement)

This continuing education program provides classes, discussion and interest groups, volunteer opportunities and social events for individuals age 55-plus. Activities are planned and facilitated by PEIR members.


Stony Brook University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Administered by the School of Professional Development, the Osher Institute is open to all retired and semi-retired individuals. Avenues for participation include peer-taught workshops, lectures, special events, committees, and social activities. The Institute is among 120 such lifelong learning programs at colleges and universities across the country, launched through grants by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Annual membership is $325. Stony Brook University also provides seniors with the opportunity to attend some classes as auditors for a nominal fee.

SeniorNet is a Virginia-based nonprofit organization that provides computer and technology classes for adults age 50 and over, designed to enhance their lives and help them share their knowledge and wisdom. On Long Island, classes are taught by volunteers at the Huntington Learning Center (the Family Service League Building) and at the East End Learning Classroom in Blue Point.


Senior Planet

Senior Planet is an online project of Older Adults Technology Services, known as OATS (https://oats.org), a New York-based nonprofit that engages, trains and supports older adults in using technology to improve their quality of life and enhance social and civic engagement. Senior Planet celebrates “aging with attitude” by bringing a digital focus to a range of topics, including news, health, sex and dating, art and design, senior style, travel and entertainment. People can sign up for regular email newsfeeds and a calendar of events.

Several other local institutions, including Adelphi University, Farmingdale State College, LIU Post, Molloy College, New York Institute of Technology and Nassau Community College also offer discounted tuition or auditing opportunities for seniors.
