Transportation for Essential Services


In addition, many towns and cities offer free or discounted services for seniors who need transportation for “essential services”—daily errands such as food shopping or non-emergency doctor visits:


Nassau County


Town of Hempstead, Department of Senior Enrichment

Mini-buses and vans provide seniors with transportation to local senior centers. Additional transportation services provided to senior center members include shopping, banking, swimming at Echo Park, and special events.


Friends in Service to Humanity (FISH))

FISH of Wantagh utilizes volunteers to provide transportation to residents of Wantagh,   North Wantagh, Bellmore and North Bellmore. Priority is given to medical transportation needs.

For seniors ages 60 and older, food shopping buses serve most communities. Discounted taxi rides are provided for non-emergency medical appointments within the town. Some bus transportation is also available to senior centers and Town-sponsored recreational events.

Food shopping transportation available (call 516-676-6182). The Medical Transport Program provides free transportation for doctor appointments, physical therapy sessions and any other non-emergency medical visits (call 516-676-2846).

“Shoppers Special” (half fare) transportation for seniors (call 516-431-4445). Non-emergency medical transportation available for seniors living in the Long Beach area.


Suffolk County


Town of Babylon, Department of Human Services

Town of Brookhaven, Senior Citizens Division

The Jitney Transportation Program is a shared ride, curb-to-curb service available to seniors age 60 and disabled residents. Weekday transportation within the town ($3 round trip fare) is provided for doctor appointments and shopping (call 631-451-9081).

Town of Huntington, Senior Division

Huntington Area Rapid Transit (HART) operates four bus routes within the greater Huntington area, which connect with neighboring bus systems operated by Suffolk County Transit and NICE. Buses are handicap-accessible and connect seniors with places of interest, including the Huntington Senior Center. Seniors, individuals with disabilities and Medicare cardholders are eligible for reduced fares. (call 631-427-8287; www.huntingtonNY.gov/hart).

Weekday non-emergency transportation provided to medical and health care facilities, government services and food shopping within the town during the week. Service for disabled persons also available. (Call 631-224-5686.)

Dial a Ride (DAR) transportation provided for seniors with no other means of transportation to

daily activities at the Senior Center, medical appointments and shopping in the town.

Senior transportation program provides free transportation to those age 60 and older for

medical appointments, food shopping, pharmacy needs, and other errands. (Medical appointments take priority.) Rides for on-island and off- island needs must be arranged in advance (call 631-749-1059 between 12:00p.m.-3:00p.m.

Residents age 60 and over and disabled individuals can use the weekday Senior Shuttle transportation program for basic services such as shopping and banking, non-emergency medical visits, and trips to governmental agencies. Call 631-728-1110.
