Housing Cost Assessment Checklist

Can they afford to maintain a single-family home, keeping in mind the costs of property taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance costs?

Have they researched property tax exemptions and eligibility?

Does it make sense for them to continue owning a home, rather than renting? Calculate the cost/benefits of both.

Do they want to be mortgage-free, or are they comfortable managing debt—even taking out a reverse mortgage down the road?

Is their location appropriate for an aging family, considering safety, access to transportation, recreation, shopping and other social activities?

Can they maintain a house and yard?

Have they considered housing transitions for later in life, when they might need day-to-day assistance?
